Solar Power Production and Storage

Australia is in one of the world’s solar “hot zones” which provides maximum exposure to the sun’s rays throughout the year.  This abundant energy source is FREE and solar panels capture this energy and convert it to usable power for your home or business.

Installing a Solar system is an investment – will return a savings on your power bill instantly once operational - real savings only start when you have the ability to store & harvest your power after sunset via a battery storage.

There are Domestic or Commercial sized Solar Arrays.

Common types of solar Arrays are;

Fixed Flat or Tilted Panel Arrays, are the lease effective at harvesting energy.

Single-Axis Tracking (SAT) Arrays can harvest up to 30% more energy.

Dual-Axis Tracking (DAT) Arrays can Harvest up to 45% more than fixed flat panel arrays.

Cost modeling show that Labour to install Fixed & Fixed Tilt system is the cheapest, then Single Axis Tracking technology is the most competitive, followed by Dual Axis Tracking system was least competitive.

However not all technologies preformed equal, as labour costs for installation play a large part of initial and final cost competitiveness. It also demonstrated how Low Cost of Energy (LCOE) can underpin a ‘Contract-for-Difference’ (CFD) feed-in tariff scheme applicable to supporting investment in utility-scale solar farms.

The key issue for either domestic or commercial solar system is producing the best financial return in the quickest time, by importing Solar power or for this matter, any alternative energy into a battery bank or storage system, will substantially contribute to black-out proofing your home or premises, thus minimising paying the deceptive electricity retainers for power after sunset, and battery/energy storage also reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, to ensure a brighter future for our planet.

Few people know that Solar power has the potential to provide over 1,000 times the total world energy consumption, though in 2017 Solar provided less than 1% of the total power used. Installing solar can contribute to increasing that figure.

So what is the best angle for a solar panel ?

The angle of the sun in the sky depends on both the season and your location on the earth;

In Winter the sun is lower in the sky.

In Summer the sun is higher in the sky.

And the closer you live to the equator (i.e. the lower your degree of latitude is), the higher the sun is in the sky all year round.

A New Super Solar Cell invented at the Australian University of New South Wales (UNSW), has gained the world efficiency record of over 40%, these solar cells are made from Gallium Arsenide, not Silicon like in conventional solar panels.  Due to past cost restrictions Gallium Arsenide solar cells were only used in space exploration and Satellites, a single 2kWh Gallium arsenide Super cell measure approx. 10cm x 15cm and replaces Six (6) 340w (2mt x 1mt, 72cell) Solar Panels when used in conjunction with Heliostat mirrors.   After receiving a million dollar government grant, RayGen, an Australian company has developed & is now manufacturing scalable commercial solar arrays.

Levelised Cost Of Energy: The calculations of Levelised Cost Of Energy (LOCE) of these three Solar PV Technologies depend crucially on assumptions made about ($/kW) construction costs and annual capacity factors of the three solar technologies being considered.

Contracts for Difference: The purpose of CFD is to incentive investments in new low-carbon electricity generation by providing stability and predictability to future revenue streams. Governments state that; "we must de-carbonise electricity generation and it is vital that we take action now to transform permanently into a low-carbon economy and meet our renewable energy target by 2020 and our 80 per cent carbon reduction target by 2050. To put us on this latter trajectory, power sector emissions need to be largely de-carbonised by the 2030s. At the heart of this strategy to deliver this transition is a new system of long-term contracts in the form of CFD, providing clear, stable and predictable revenue streams for investors in low-carbon electricity generation".

CFD's explained: Is a financial hedging arrangement, where two parties agree to trade a certain volume of a product for a set price. These parties do not physically exchange this product in the ‘hedge market’. The product is purchased in a separate ‘physical market’ (e.g. a wholesale electricity ‘spot market’). If the price is higher or lower than the agreed price, then the parties settle the difference between the ‘hedge contract’ and ‘physical market’ prices. (Search, Electricity Futures Contract and Spot Market.)

CFD is usually a long-term contract between an electricity generator and Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC). The contract enables the generator to stabilise its revenues at a pre-agreed level (the Strike Price) for the duration of the contract. Under the CFD, payments can flow from LCCC to the generator, and vice versa. So, again, under the CFD's, when the market price for electricity generated by a CFD Generator (the spot market price) is below the Strike Price set out in the contract, payments are usually made by LCCC to the CFD Generator to make up the difference. However, when the reference price is above the Strike Price, the CFD Generator pays LCCC the difference.

What is your Solar Array payback time?

This is covered in more detail on either the Domestic or Commercial Solar Array pages, there are some significant differences to address with the type of power that is produced (AC/DC) and in turn the distance the power needs to travel before it is converted &/or consumed.

When compared to Fixed rooftop or ground mounted Solar Arrays, Single and Dual Axis Solar Tracking will significantly increase the amount of solar energy that is harvested.  We advise the purchase of either type of tracking, use the pros & Cons that best suits your location.

If planning to Go-Off-Grid using a Solar Array & Gen-set, we highly advise you invest in Battery storage, as battery storage is a lot less a stand-by Diesel Generator, if your area is plagued by power outages & ever increasing power bills, as a Power system with a Solar array, Battery storage & a Diesel Generator combination will provide a totally reliable and independent power system, it's worth calculating how little it costs to run a Diesel Generator to totally black-out proof your system, yes it is a larger investment purchasing all three, however the reliability this system will provide is priceless, and the saving you will make will be ongoing for decades to come.

One great thing about Pole mounted Solar Tracking system, it is in fact the easiest system to dismantle & remove the whole assembly including the Pole, leaving no damage or footprint behind, this leaves you free to take it to your next premises and re-install it.
